Actor Jim Carrey tells graduates to “Take a chance on doing what you love” during a commencement speech at Iowa’s Maharishi University of Management.
The well-known comedian told students that people make choices based on love or fear. And making the safe choice ( or practical choice) is done because of the fear of what people may really want seems out of reach and impossible to get.
He revealed that his late father’s career choices inspired him to follow his dreams rather than choose what is practical or conservative.
“My father could have been a great comedian, but he didn’t believe that that was possible for him, and so he made a conservative choice. Instead, he got a safe job as an accountant.”
But when Carrey was 12, his father was let go from accounting job and said that’s when he learned a great lesson.
“You could fail at what you don’t love, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.”
